TikTok or Meta for an online store: which one, and when

A practical comparison of TikTok and Meta ads for online stores: what each platform does best, the risks, and how to split your budget.

“TikTok or Meta?” gets asked as if you had to pick one. In most cases the answer is both, at different moments and in different roles. Here is how we think about them when planning campaigns for an online store.

What Meta does best

Meta (Facebook and Instagram) is the more mature sales system. Catalog campaigns show people the exact products they looked at. Retargeting works well, Advantage+ campaigns learn quickly once they have enough data, and purchase tracking is easier to set up.

The audience spans a wide age range. If you sell to people aged 35, 45 or 60, Meta is usually the safer place to start.

What TikTok does best

TikTok is strong at product discovery. People there aren’t searching for anything specific and are open to new things, so one good creative can reach a lot of people cheaply.

The trade-off is that TikTok needs ads that fit the platform. A studio ad looks out of place and gets skipped. What works are videos that look like normal content: a person talking, showing, reacting. Creative also wears out faster, so you need a steady supply of new ones.

The risk people rarely mention

Ad accounts can get suspended. We’ve seen a TikTok account blocked without a specific reason, and appeals take time. Meta suspends accounts too, especially in categories like supplements and cosmetics.

That’s why we never put the whole budget on one platform. If one stops, the other keeps bringing in orders while the issue is sorted out.

Regulated categories

For supplements, cosmetics and intimate care, both platforms are strict. Ad claims, landing page text and even images get reviewed. When the ad and the page after it say different things, the ad gets rejected or the account gets a warning. So we build the landing page together with the ads.

How we decide where to start

Situation Where we start
New store with no purchase data Meta
Audience over 35 Meta
Product that a few seconds of video can explain TikTok test with a separate budget
You have 5 to 10 videos in TikTok’s style TikTok test
Large catalog and steady site traffic Meta catalog campaigns and retargeting
Category with a high risk of account suspension Both, never the whole budget on one

Measure orders, not platform reports

Meta and TikTok both report sales linked to their ads. When a customer saw ads on both, each platform may count the same order. So we look at total orders and revenue in the store and compare them with total ad spend. That shows whether adding TikTok brings genuinely new sales or just shifts the credit.

Which one to choose

Meta is the safer base for sales and retargeting. TikTok is a good way to reach new people if you have creative in its style. Most online stores do best with both, when each platform has a clear role and the budget doesn’t depend on just one.
